Peter Salus wrote a nice book on 25 years of Unix history. 
Addison-Wesley published it.  It is entitled "A Quarter Century of 
Unix"

If we don't know if something is basically the same code, or if it 
requires interaction with the OS to trigger and the OS is different, 
then we should have separate listings.
